Following Jesus is about living a life that is as different as night and day, darkness and light. 1 John warns us to avoid the practice of sin, which he equates with walking in darkness. “If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:6-7 NRSV). Followers of Christ have given up the old ways of following sin, to follow a new and freeing Master.
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 NIV)
