Sometimes the Father has us relinquish a thing in our hand so that He can give us something better. Then there are times that He insists that we release a thing that should not have been in our hand in the first place. It is far too easy for things to come into our lives that compete with the preeminence of the Father. You do not have to bow to a thing for it to become an idol. An idol is anything that nudges God to one side. It may even be something that we think is good or innocent.
“You shall have no other gods before Me,” means that you are to have no gods “beside Me”, or “in addition to Me”. The literal Hebrew is, “You shall have no other gods in my face.” Deuteronomy 5:7
