Advent Glimpses of our Future
The ancient prophet said that there would be “new heavens and a new earth”. That same hope was repeated by John and Peter. The new heavens and the new earth will have continuity with what they are replacing, just as the resurrected body of Jesus had continuity with the incarnate Lord that walked roads of Galilee. Our returning Christ will make all things new. This earth will be resurrected for a resurrected people. The good earth will not be abandoned to the rot of sin’s consequences but will be remade for the Father’s children. The earth is a beautiful place now and will be even more resplendent, beyond our imagination, when Jesus renews it all.
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.” Revelation 21:1 (ESV)
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.”2 Peter 3:13 (ESV)
“But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” Isaiah 65:17 (ESV)
