A farmer who plants seeds knows that there needs to be at least two seasons of rain. The first is following germination for starting growth and the other is the rain prior to final harvest that yields maximum fruit; both are needed. The Lord comes to receive the harvest and rejoice in our growth. We tend the seed and the soil; we pray for water so that the Lord of the Harvest will be pleased with us when He comes. Patience is required for both farming and spiritual formation. You can’t rush it. Longing for the coming of the Lord is a great incentive for good farming and spiritual formation practices.
“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” (James 5:7–8 ESV).
