Mystery is not to enter an unreal world; God’s mystery is true reality.  We are so given to want to explain everything.  Our superlative adjectives used to describe Him fall very short in approaching Him who lives in “unapproachable Light”. Everything from incarnation. to Trinity, to atonement, to sacraments, to intercession are all wrapped in mystery.  These are not puzzles to be solved but mysteries that we enter.  We lord it over our theologies, but not over His mysteries. We want to hold and explain; mystery wants to hold us and lift us into the God who is in all and above all.  Our views of Him are low, pitiful and inadequate.  We talk about religion; we are silent before Mystery.  Get alone with Him and start sensing something you can’t verbalize. Our doctrine/theology is totally inadequate if it is not wed to Mystery.  Our loss of awe has impoverished us; a return to Mystery can make us rich again.

“He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.” (1 Timothy 6:15b–16 NRSV).
