The King of the Jews was mocked with a robe, a crown of thorns, and a stick for a scepter. This was intended to be mockery of His “kingdom”. The mockery was meant to say that His kingdom was not to be taken seriously. The disciples thought He came to develop a strong military to overthrow their enemies. Jesus rejected outrightly being that kind of Messiah. Even today some of His followers do not take His kingdom seriously; it is thought not to be realistic in a world where power wins. Ignoring it has the same outcome as mocking it; His kingship and kingdom is still rejected.
“They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’” Matthew 27:28-29 (NRSV)
