The Psalms speak of those who meditate on God’s truth day and night.  Day and night parallels praying without ceasing (I Thessalonians 5:16).  This is constantly having God in our thoughts.  It is to allow a truth to be turned over, again and again, in our minds.  It is like seeking new light from a different facet of a diamond.  Meditation allows the meaning of the written word to engage us in every area of our lives.  Meditation will guide us away from some temptations and through others.  It will teach us how to embody love, which is the fulfillment of the law.  It will keep us genuine, while giving us inner joy.

“But their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night.” Psalm 1:2 (NRSV)
