The gods require sacrifice. Our sacrifices belie the god behind the sacrifices we make. Mammon, the god of our culture, calls for all kinds of sacrifices to keep itself in the god-place. It calls for us to sacrifice our time for more money away from those we love. It calls us to accumulate beyond the basic needs of life. When it drives us, when it consumes us, those we love are its casualties; those we truly care about are its sacrifices.
Lord Jesus, You told us that we cannot serve God and Mammon, yet we persist in having two masters. Heal our divided hearts. May you be Lord alone in our hearts and in our practices. Amen.
