He has been called the “rich young ruler”. He counted himself to be a keeper of the Ten Commandments. Yet, he had something that he loved so much that it closed the door to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he loved him, even though he was held captive by his idol of money and was going to walk away. Jesus’ word was delivered with no prophetic harshness. The man walked away from pure love toward something that he loved more. As followers of Christ we are called to see with eyes of love, even those who reject our message.
“Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing you lack: go your way, sell whatsoever you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” Mark 10:21-22
