The closer we get to Jesus, the clearer is our vision of sin.  His Light reveals where we are.  The closer we get to Him, the wider the distance between us and Him seems.  The more we become like Christ, the more we realize how wide the gap is.  There is something about the nearness to holiness that makes us cry out as Isaiah did, “Woe is me.”  There is fullness of joy in being near Him; there is growth toward His likeness as we commune with Him.  His Presence cleanses.  His nearness revives.  Though you will feel the distance, you will actually be living closer.
