“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey…And He will speak peace to the nations; And His dominion will be from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:9-10).
Palm branches were waved for Jesus the King. His arrival in Jerusalem was the announcement of the arrival of the Peaceable Kingdom. Others had ridden their white horses in triumphant parades following military conquest. He rode a humble donkey; He was about to establish His Kingdom, not by killing His enemies, but by laying down His life for them. This kingdom was going to be from “sea to sea” and “to the ends of the earth”. It is still being established by the nonviolence of suffering for those who would kill it. Nations are built by the power of winning wars and waving swords; His Kingdom is established by the weakness of the cross and waving palm branches.
