“And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly” Matthew 1:19 (NASB). Joseph is considering another way to break off the engagement. He wrestled with the letter of the law to come up with a better way to deal with Mary’s pregnancy. He had the option of calling the elders of the town together, humiliating her real good, sending her away, and letting her and her child live their lives shunned. That was too harsh for Joseph’s Christlike spirit.
Lord, is there something in me that wants too much for people to get what is coming to them? Is there something in me that loves the law more than grace and justice more than mercy? Do I prayerfully consider what to do in such cases? Help me Lord to be more like Joseph and the Son he raised.
