Theologically we seek to balance the immanence and transcendence of God; that is, how He is “high and lifted up” and “near as our breath”? How can we see what cannot be seen?  Yet, He makes Himself visible in His Son who is Word and Wisdom incarnate. He Who is Holy, Who is Love, He Who is high is also near.  The Psalmist ask worshipers going to the temple, “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?” “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully” (Psalm 24:3–4 ESV). His answer is really about sanctuary worship, though it has a heavenly application as well. Not everything can stand before Him. “Our God is a consuming fire” (Deuteronomy 4:24). Prepare yourself, better, let Him prepare you. “For everyone will be salted with fire” (Mark 9:49 ESV).

“Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:28-29 (NASB)
