“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17).  The law announced condemnation; grace announces love and mercy.  The law could not change us but love and grace could.  The law revealed truth as a moral code; grace revealed Truth as a Person.  The law was preparatory, awaiting the fullness of grace.  The incarnation (life-of-God-in-flesh-among-us) demonstrated Jesus Messiah was one that was “full of grace and truth” (1:14).  Grace is God’s attitude toward us and His energy at work in us.  To receive Him is to receive embodied Truth and grace piled on top of grace (1:16).

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth…For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” John 1:14, 16-18 (ESV)
