The Revelation of a God of love did not come from philosophical deduction or theological theory. It came from the gift of Christ to the world, through whom the apostles saw, “God is love”. What other world religion shows such a God? The god who demands that we kill each other as an expression of faith is a primitive god shaped by those who choose hate. The God revealed in Christ is not a God of terror. He has no pleasure in the death of His enemies. It is only in truly knowing Jesus that we move from a hateful God to a loving God. This was the grand discovery of the early apostles. It is this rediscovery of God that the world desperately needs.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8 (ESV)
