Much of the law and prophets was meant to give God’s people a conscience about things that the surrounding cultures did not have.  Conscience was to be rooted in the nature of a Holy God and being made in His likeness.  Over time the gospel has given us a conscience about caring for the sick, the lonely, the down and out, etc.  Hospitals, schools and helping agencies grew out of this conscience.  Slavery was rejected.  Racism has a light shining on it.  Human trafficking exposed.  Materialism and mammon are uncovered as idolatry.  Lust and greed are shown to be using other people for one’s own gratification in dehumanizing ways.  Injustice and unrighteousness cannot hide. Let the Spirit speak to you through the Book and you will get a conscience.  Oh, how we need it.

“So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.” (Acts 24:16 ESV).
