As surely as we can quench the Spirit (I Thessalonians 5:19), we can facilitate His work by stirring up the gift that is in us. To quench the Spirit is to put out the fire; to facilitate is to rekindle the fire. As surely as we can grieve (sadden or hurt) the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30), we can gladden and give Him joy by obedience. To facilitate Him is not manipulation but is cooperation. We can facilitate the Spirit’s work by attentively reading His inspired writings. We can facilitate His work by a kind of praying where we begin to pray what He is praying for us (Romans 8:26). We can facilitate His work by putting to death any sinful deed of the body (Romans 8:12-14). We can passionately pray and intercede for a fresh filling of the Spirit (Acts 4:31). We can follow the currents of the Spirit by being a part of what He is now doing in the church and the world.
Holy Spirit, may we never hinder Your work in us and in the world by being insensitive to who You are and what You are doing. Teacher, teach us how to facilitate Your activity. Oh River, carry us along with Your wonderful agenda. Amen!
