Our words betray what is in our hearts. In a culture of consumerism, it is easy to fall into the trap of talking about how much we want. Envy is often accompanied by resentment for what another possesses. Envy thinks that, “I would be a better person to have that than they.” Gratitude is stifled. Contentment is scolded. Spiritual blessings are seen as less valuable than material ones. Love for all persons drives out envy, because “Love does not envy” (I Cor 13:4).
“Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.” 1 Peter 2:1-3 (NASB)
