Recovery literature has a powerful acronym for ego. It is E.G.O., Edging God Out. That has happened from Eden forward. We want to be in control, so we push God to the parameters of our lives, if not all the way out. We want Him for emergencies, but other than that, “I think I can do quite well by myself, thank you.” We want to be our own self-sovereign. It does not work. Life becomes fractured and broken. Keeping God enthroned in our lives makes us whole and is the only healthy way to live.
“Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh? Can the rushes grow without water? While it is still green and not cut down, yet it withers before any other plant. So are the paths of all who forget God; and the hope of the godless will perish, whose confidence is fragile, and whose trust a spider’s web. He trusts in his house, but it does not stand; He holds fast to it, but it does not endure.” Job 8:11-15 (NASB)
