Jesus and three of His disciples came down from the Mount of Transfiguration only to meet nine disciples arguing with the scribes over a failure to exorcise a demonic spirit. Impossible situations can meet us when we come down from the mountain. We would like to stay on the mountain in the glow and glory of our Lord. But at the bottom of the mountain there is a crisis. There are pressing human needs all around us. The mountain is not our escape from the valley but our empowerment to reenter it.
17And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” (Mark 9:17-18 ESV).
