Real disciples intentionally do the teachings of Jesus as an expression of love for Him and His ways. Putting His teachings into practice is an obedience that is life transforming. It replaces old ways of living with new habits. Soon the practice of His commands becomes a new ingrained habit. Over time the Sanctifying Spirit works in these to transform our character so that we do His ways naturally. It becomes who we are.
