The disciples believed that the man born blind was because of his or his parents’ sins. Jesus disagreed. Nor did He say, “God predetermined it.” Jesus saw it as an opportunity that the “works of God might be displayed in him.” He healed him as a sign that He himself is the light of the world. Fanny Crosby never received her sight back, but the works of God were displayed in her. Whether by healing or helping grace, the followers of the Lamb are triumphing day by day. In them the works of God are on display.
As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” John 9:1-3 (ESV)
