In thinking about disciplined living, consider the origins of Methodism. In November of 1729 at Oxford University two college students named John and Charles Wesley, along with two of their fellow students, started a small-cell group to methodically develop themselves spiritually by rigorous disciplined living. “Jeering college students scoffed at these “Methodists” who tried to systematically serve God every hour of the day. The club members set aside time for praying, examining their spiritual lives, studying the Bible, and meeting together. In addition, they took food to poor families, visited lonely people in prison, and taught orphans how to read. Members of the organization celebrated Holy Communion frequently and fasted on Wednesdays and Fridays until 3 pm” (Wikipedia). Disciplined living changed the lives of this small group and ultimately changed the history of Christianity and the world. Never underestimate the power of systematic rigorous spiritual devotion.
Father, may I live a repentance that does not merely regret my wrongs, may I live to replace them with what is right. Amen.
