Self-pity And Humility
Self-pity is a false humility. The ego thinks it is appropriate in light of its problems. It is really pride wearing sheep’s clothes. We do not ever hear self-pity in the words of Jesus, only cross language. Self-pity cannot be allowed to take up residence in our mind. It is a subtile rejection of the cross, which is never healthy. Self-pity’s hymn is “Unfair”; it’s melody is “Poor Me” while it drives other good songs and melodies away. It is easy to fall into, because it seems so justifiable. It is both unhealthy and unChristlike. It belongs to the false self; it needs to die so that the true self can blossom in Christlike beauty.
Oh my soul, may I not entertain self-pity when it knocks at the door of my life. May I not feed it by self-justifying conversations or by blaming others. May the life that I am writing always have on it the signature of the cross, lest I fall into some anti-cross sin. Amen!
