A godly grieving for one’s sin is the basis of confession and grounds for repentance. Godly grieving feels the sinfulness of one’s sins. It is the pain that the soul feels when it knows it has hurt its God. Unfelt sin is a curse on the soul. We must never embrace sin as a necessity, then choosing the ones we like. How can one who sins presumptuously ever be brought to a place of “godly grief”? Dangerous beyond words!
“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.” 2 Corinthians 7:10-11 (ESV)
