Holding another person’s pain is a way of holding that person. It is our unity with the suffering by co-suffering love. It is the way of the incarnation. It is the way of compassion. Human suffering is everywhere. Faith is not how we can avoid suffering, but how we get through it. The suffering person needs someone to be there for them. We are called to hold their pain and to weep with them. We are called to enter the pain of the world. It is one of the things that it means to be human in a world of hurting humans. It is to be like Jesus.
“Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (NASB)
