There is nothing sadder than a soul closed in on itself.  What is going on inside eclipses the beauty of the surrounding horizon; the heart has lost its wonder and nothing holds it in awe.  It can barely see the suffering of the world around it, since it is thinking of its own pain.  God is not closed in on Himself, for He is ever loving, serving and sustaining His creation.  The way out of this dark tunnel is to open yourself to the ever-flowing grace of our Lord; it declares we are loved and have value.  From that reality, celebrate the souls around you.

“Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence.” Psalm 42:5 (NASB)
