We all know Jesus said, “Love your enemies.” What does that mean? To love our enemies does not mean that we surrender all that we have come to know about God. It does not mean that we agree with them if they are acting in evil ways. It does not mean that we are so tolerant that we abandon truth to embrace the false. It does mean that we look at them as those made in the divine likeness. We look at them as another for whom Christ died. We look at them as loved by our Father just as we are loved by our Father.
“To love our enemies cannot mean that we must connive with their injustice. It does mean that beyond all moral distinctions of history we must know ourselves one with our enemies not only in the bonds of common humanity but also in the bonds of common guilt by which that humanity has become corrupted.” Reinhold Niebuhr
