The first step in the 12 step program is to confess to being “powerless” to change behaviors solely in one’s own strength. The second step is to rely on a “Higher Power.” This was never meant to leave God nameless, but it is a confession that we need a power higher than ourselves, God’s enabling, empowering grace to change. The power for the Christian is the indwelling Christ. With the strength of Christ in us, both radical and gradual change occurs.
