I am stricken by Jesus’ chosen words in the parable of the Good Samaritan, “By chance”. “And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.” (Lu 10:31). On this well traveled road walked a priest and a Levite, where a random crime had occurred. They happened to be at a place where mercy and compassion were needed, but they passed by to go do their religious duties, avoiding ceremonial defilement. An unlikely Samaritan businessman traveled behind them. Something in him changed chance to a transforming act of mercy. Whom will you encounter by chance that gives you an opportunity to show what is in your heart? Don’t walk by your chance. Compassion changes chance to an opportunity to do good.
