We live in a culture that highly values experiences. This helps to fuel the drug culture, as well as the search for emotional religious experiences. To us, burning bushes are experiences to be highly prized. In the biblical record, the burning bush launched Moses on a life-long difficult journey. After the bush he would confront evil powers and try to lead obstinate people. If we seek to turn burning bushes into our special glory moments, apart from the radical call of a slave-freeing mission, we have missed the mark and turned toward idolatry.
“Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.” Exodus 3:10 (NASB)
