The eternal Word was with God and was God.  The Word, by incarnation, was born from a human so that humans could be born from God.  Without Him becoming one of us we could never become one of His.  We fall so short of a real appreciation of the incarnation and for the necessity of the Word being made flesh.  The route the Father chose to rescue us was driven by love to be one with us so that we could be one with Him.  This is the start of heaven and earth, that He was born of us so that we can be born of Him.

“But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.”  John 1:12-13 (NRSV)
