Our devotional life must move beyond mere sentimentality and beautiful thoughts. This can mask itself as true spirituality. Human words can be a beautiful thing to consider. Spirituality is rooted in a commitment to our Creator God. It is a blend of awe and worship, along with faith and trust. It is an inner knowing of One who is the Essence for which our souls long. Poetry, prose and oratory can point to Him, but we know that our relationship to Him is beyond all of these beautiful thoughts.
“My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to listen to your words, but they do not put them into practice. With their mouths they express devotion, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.” Ezekiel 33:31-32 (NIV)
