The false prophet confuses the true and the false.  Discernment is desperately needed in every generation to expose him.  He comes as counter-truth, as alternate truth.  He comes offering superior knowledge.  He comes as a messenger of light.  The more people the false prophet can get repeating his message, the harder it is to see the falsity and the harder it is to root his message from the hearts of people.  The longer it is circulated, the more orthodox it sounds.  When the church looses the discerning of spirits then the false takes the chief seats among the people of God.  The NT is full of stories of dealing with these false ones.  Sometimes their departure reduces the numbers of the people of God, because they always have followers who will depart with them (1 Peter 2:2).

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1 ESV)
