“Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above’” (John 3:3 NRSV). Do you know what we have left out of that verse in our haste to promote the new birth? It is the “kingdom of God” — seeing the kingdom — having a vision of the government of God — living in the kingdom as our primary place of being — not caught up with the governments of this world, but seeking to live out the government of God, which invites all to become citizens of the Kingdom. Being “born from above”, seeing the Kingdom, has huge implications about how we live in a political world! Is not Jesus saying that the goal of being “born from above” is to “see the Kingdom”? It is here even now! See it! Live in it! Live by its values!
