Every counselor knows, or should know, that it takes time for a person to come to a confession or even realization of their core problem. Before then the counselor must detect false clues and detours that keep him or her away from the core issues at the heart of the problem. We must know that this avoidance exists in all of us when it comes to facing our real problems. Pride does not like to admit it is wrong. Only sinners can ask for forgiveness. Only the dirty can asked to be cleansed. It takes more than self-examination to come to this place; it takes seeing a holy God to long for the transformation we need.
“Then I said, ‘Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.’” Isaiah 6:5 (NASB)
