If our devotional thinking does not connect spiritual truths to the hard nitty gritty problems of life, then it is an exercise in empty piety. I believe the teachings of Jesus hit hard on the issues of our day if we will only hear them. Jesus’ teaching is more radical than we think. He exposes the inadequacy of our thinking about Him. He challenges our comfortable norms. He digs at the roots of our hypocrisy. He strips off our self-righteous rags. He will confront us when we neglect mercy and justice. Walking with Jesus is much more than a nice stroll in the park.
