Paul said that we were to be “slaves of righteousness”. That is, we are to serve righteousness by doing right (i.e. obedience) as God declares right. We serve in view of the day when our Lord will come and set all things right. Jesus said, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness” (Mt. 6:33). Our King is a righteous King. Righteousness and justice are the climate of the Kingdom of God. This covenant faithfulness is in the DNA of the King, and He wishes to pass it on to His children. He and His children are setting right what sin set wrong.
“Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness…For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.” Rom 6:16-19 (NASB)
