In Exodus 30, there were precise recipes for anointing oil and incense. Persons who made either one by this sacred recipe to be used in secular places were to be “cut off from the people” (vv 33 & 38). What is going on here? God is unique, in a category all by Himself. We love and worship Him like no other and serve Him in the awesomeness of His holiness. The veneration of our Lord is a perfume set apart from all others and has its own holy fragrance.
“Whoever makes perfume like it and whoever puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from his people…Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the LORD. Whoever makes any like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from his people.” Exodus 30:33, 37-38 (NIV)
