The church was born in a pagan world, and it did just fine. Polytheism and idol worship were everywhere. Sensuality with its confusion about human sexuality abounded. Dehumanizing slavery was highly prevalent. The pagan world was not a match for the Kingdom of God. The announced gospel made it obsolete. It crumbled before a Spirit empowered church. The risen Christ was set loose on the world from death and Hades’ claim on Him, a claim that could not stick. Let’s stop wringing our hands over the increased paganism of our world. Let us take our cues from the early church and see what the Spirit will do. The giant of paganism is a dwarf before a Spirit empowered Kingdom.
Father, forgive us for being peddlers of despair. May we see it for what it is, a lack of confidence in You, through whom we triumph over all things.
