Palm Sunday was the day that Jesus publicly presented himself as Israel’s Messiah by acting out an OT prophecy. He even paraded the kind of humble Kingdom He was bringing. Look at the man on the donkey! He does not look like the promised descendant of David! He does not look like one whose dominion will be from “sea to sea” and “to the ends of the earth!” But, you just wait and see! His Kingdom marches on! The rejoicing on Palm Sunday anticipates the day when all will shout, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (Ps 118:26, Mt 21:9, Lk 13:35).
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey…And He will speak peace to the nations; And His dominion will be from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth” Zechariah 9:9-10.
