A new term is coming to the fore to describe our day— hyper-individualism. It is different from, but the first cousin of narcissism (self-worship). Hyper-individualism is a culture turned totally to the individual. You might call it hyper-selfishness. Everything is about us, our needs, our whims and drives. It has an aversion to community, which it desperately needs. We as believers need to become more intentional about our faith communities. The church is not a place set against individuals, but a place where individuals can find themselves in the give and take of community. It is to be a place of unconditional love that can produce a radical cure for selfishness.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
