In ancient days when two parties made a covenant, they would walk between the pieces of a divided sacrifice, saying as it were, “If this covenant is broken, this is what will happen to me.”  However, when God initiated the covenant with Abraham, He alone walked the pieces while His friend was in a “deep sleep” (Gen 15:12).  On the cross He took on Himself the price of a shattered covenant, dying for a broken covenant and establishing a New Covenant.  The cross did not take Him by surprise.  He planned for it!  Oh my!  What love!  What mercy!  What grace!

“When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.  On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram.”  Genesis 15:17-18a (NIV)
