My friend and mentor, Dr. H. Ray Dunning, said, “The purpose of the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is to reproduce the character of Christ.”  We want to think that the Spirit is in us for our comfort, guidance, assurance, and companionship.  All of these are true, but beyond and above all of that, He is with us in all of these things for the purpose of producing Christlikeness.  The character of Christ is produced by our positive response to the actions of the Spirit in us.  He is the Spirit of the Lord making us like our Lord.

O to be like Thee!  Lord, I am coming, now to receive th’anointing divine.

All that I am and have I am bringing; Lord, from this moment all shall be Thine.

O to be like Thee!  O to be like Thee, Blessed Redeemer, pure as thou art!

Come in Thy sweetness; come in Thy fullness.

Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.

O to be like Thee!  While I am pleading, pour out Thy Spirit; fill with Thy love.

Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling; fit me for life and heaven above.

O to be like Thee!  O to be like Thee, Blessed Redeemer, pure as thou art!

Come in Thy sweetness; come in Thy fullness.

Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart. —Thomas O. Chisholm
