Jesus was not preoccupied with self-focus.  He was focused on His Father.  It was the way He knew what to do and how to be.  This is the pattern for us.  Fallen humans need self-examination for confession, but they dare not fall into self-focus.  As the Son was focused in love upon His Father, so we are to be focused on the Son.  As we keep focused on Him we are changed to be like Him, In this way we come to know both the Son and the Father, and in so doing we always find our mission.

“Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise.  The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished.” John 5:19-20 (NRSV)
