God loves us, not because of who we are, but because of who He is.  We should love others for the same reason.  It is not about the object of love being perfect or worthy, but it is about our becoming the kind of persons that will love with God’s kind of love.  If God had waited until you were worthy of His love, you would yet be unloved.  God has called us in love to become the kind of people who love the flawed, the imperfect, sinners and enemies.

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.” 1 John 4:10-12 (NASB)
