One of the worst things that could be said about a person in the ancient world was that they were a covenant breaker.  There are covenants for community, marriage and our relationship with God.  Churches have covenants of belief and conduct.  God’s faithfulness to His covenant with us is called righteousness.  He is faithful, even when we are not.  Broken covenants cease to protect that which they are supposed to protect, when there is no virtue to keep the promises.  We follow Jesus our Messiah and have entered in to the New Covenant with Him.  Keep faith.  Keep covenant.  Follow fidelity.  Follow righteousness.

I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession, saying, “Ah, Lord, great and awesome God, keeping covenant and steadfast love with those who love you and keep your commandments, we have sinned and done wrong, acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and ordinances.” Daniel 9:4-5 (NRSV)
