God seldom speaks in an audible voice.  We hear Him in our deep inner self.  Most of our hearing is selective, colored by our own predispositions.  We want to hear God affirm us and our ideas.  Because of this, it is easy to distort His words.  We are warned about adding to and taking from His words.  If we would be often with Him and listen to His heart as revealed in His Son, we would be less apt to distort what He is saying.  The God who speaks invites us to listen.

“For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. O that today you would listen to his voice!” Psalm 95:7 (NRSV)
