A sick self will express itself in sick ways.  This unhealthy self can occasionally do wonderful unselfish things, but it defaults quickly to the unhealthy self, and all systems operate from that flawed default.  Until this self-system is fixed by grace, good deeds may be a mask for a hidden disorder.  A sick self is turned in on itself. The Great Physician can fix that as we yield all the hidden things up for His cure.  A healthy self loves God completely and loves his neighbor as himself.

And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”   Mark 2:17 (NASB)
